FAMOUS Project Marks Milestone with New ATV Concept

A new all-terrain vehicle (ATV) concept vehicle developed under the European FAMOUS (Future Highly Mobile Augmented Armoured Systems) programme was unveiled at Eurosatory by Patria.

The FAMOUS programme, funded by the EU, seeks to improve the performance of both existing and new armoured vehicles. The unveiled concept marks a significant milestone, showcasing a multi-purpose tracked platform designed to excel in a wide range of operational environments.
The vehicle solution is a high-performance platform intended for all geographical environments, including extreme climates. The vehicle under development is expected to have excellent tactical and operational mobility. Attention is also being paid to its survivability, costs and modularity.

Mikko Karppinen, Senior Vice President, Protected Mobility and Defence Systems of Patria, explained: “The FAMOUS programme is fully aligned with the European Commission’s goal to enhance the competitiveness and innovation capacity of the EU’s defence industry. We are proud to reveal this Tracked Armoured Personnel Carrier concept vehicle generated with the support of FAMOUS programme. We have now proceeded to the concept testing stage and the performance of the future solution can be tested in practice.”

Finland serves as the leading nation for the FAMOUS programme, with Patria acting as the project’s industrial coordinator. Patria also shoulders the key responsibility of designing tracked vehicles, integrating systems, and manufacturing prototypes. The collaborative effort boasts participation from nine countries alongside 18 leading European defence companies.

The project has secured financial backing from the European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP) under Grant Agreements.
Boosting EU Land Forces for the Future
Enhancing the mobility and combat effectiveness of land troops is a cornerstone of long-term EU defence development. To address this critical need, the FAMOUS programme is a collaborative European initiative.

It focuses on developing cutting-edge technologies to boost the performance and ground combat capabilities of next-generation armoured vehicles.
The programme operates in two phases: a study phase (EDIDP FAMOUS) and a development phase (EDF FAMOUS2).
With a total budget of around €132 million, it leverages funding from various sources. The European Commission contributes through the European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP) for a total of €9 million. The European Defence Fund (EDF) provides a significant portion at €95 million. The remaining €28 million comes from member states and participating companies’ investments.

Completion of FAMOUS Phase
The programme’s first phase successfully concluded between December 2022 and November 2023. This initial stage focused on in-depth research and studies to assess member states’ needs and requirements for future armoured vehicles.

The programme meticulously reviewed potential vehicle and system concepts, along with feasible architectures, based on the identified needs. Evaluations prioritised performance potential, costs, complexity, and most importantly, the mobility of each concept.

Drawing on the results of these comprehensive feasibility studies, a target vehicle concept was successfully confirmed for the development phase.
The plan extends its focus beyond the development of a single vehicle. It aims to optimise synergies, standardisation, and commonalities across All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs), Light Armoured Vehicles (LAVs), and even upgrades for Main Battle Tanks (MBTs).

FAMOUS fosters the development of innovative technologies related to mobility, energy production, protection, enhanced situational awareness, autonomy, weapon systems, C4I (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence), and improved maintainability.
Finland is the lead nation and Patria is the industrial coordinator.

EDF FAMOUS2: Moving from Design to Reality
The EDF FAMOUS2 phase marks a significant shift towards realising the FAMOUS vision. This stage focuses on meticulously crafting a detailed architectural design and comprehensive requirement specifications for the tracked armoured personnel carrier (APC).

The project actively translates these specifications into a tangible design, with prototyping and verification tests conducted to ensure the vehicle meets all project requirements. EDF FAMOUS2 commenced in December 2023 and is projected to conclude in November 2026.

Finnish Army’s Arctic Mobility
The Finnish Army’s Arctic Mobility project aims to develop a new vehicle solution to replace its obsolete all-terrain vehicles. The ongoing feasibility study will inform the creation of a prototype with awarded funding.

The high-capability vehicle is intended to ensure excellent tactical and operational mobility in the challenging northern region’s weather and terrain. Development will occur over the next few years, with procurement decisions to follow.
