Fincantieri Charts New Horizons in Robotics at REPMUS

Fincantieri, along with its subsidiaries Fincantieri NexTech and IDS, participated again in REPMUS, an annual military exercise focused on robotic experimentation and prototyping using maritime unmanned systems.

Held recently in Portugal, REPMUS 2024 brought together foreign military forces, universities, and leading technology companies to showcase their latest advancements in the field.
In collaboration with the Italian Navy’s CSSN, Graal Tech, and WSense, the company conducted real-world testing of cutting-edge unmanned autonomous technologies.

The Multi-Mission Unmanned System (MUS) Toolkit, based on the Surface Advanced Naval Drone (SAND), and the innovative Unmanned Management System (UMS) were evaluated in realistic operational scenarios.

Operative Scenarios of SAND
The operative scenarios of SAND included search and rescue missions, where shipwrecked individuals were located and rescued under the worst sea conditions. Environmental monitoring was conducted, involving the detection and reporting of ecological damage in marine or freshwater areas.

The hydrographic service undertook surveys of water bodies and seabeds, gathering essential data such as current strength, tides, vortices, and bottom profiles. Cargo shuttles and medical support were provided to and from offshore platforms and islands. Maritime security operations were also carried out, with surveillance above and below the surface to detect potential threats to assets and infrastructure.

Fincantieri’s presence at REPMUS highlighted its commitment to strengthening its underwater strategy, addressing emerging geopolitical challenges through technological innovation.

The 2024 edition featured an upgraded IDS Unmanned Management System (UMS), enhanced with new technical solutions. These upgrades supported unmanned vehicle tasks and ensured interoperability through protocols like NATO’s STANAG 4817 and APP-11 for Naval Mine Warfare.

This created a seamless digital link between underwater vehicle sensors, the SAND Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV), and the UMS. Operators accessed data more effectively, enabling real-time monitoring, behaviour adjustments, and mission report generation.

Variety of Missions
The Multi-Mission MUS Toolkit integrates with both new and existing vessels to enhance military operations. Developed by Fincantieri NexTech’s Unmanned Management Systems & Underwater division, it leverages IDS’s expertise in remote-controlled systems for UMS platforms and autonomous operations, managed via remote stations.

Launched in early 2019 as part of a joint project between IDS, Effebi, and Meccano Engineering, the SAND surface drone is a multi-role, reconfigurable unmanned vehicle capable of performing a variety of missions such as search and rescue, environmental monitoring, and maritime security.

It is specifically designed to safely and effectively replace personnel in dangerous or repetitive operational scenarios with autonomous and unmanned vessels.
