Kazakhstan Receives New Batch of Arlan APCs

Kazakhstan Paramount Engineering (KPE) has announced the delivery of a new batch of Arlan 4x4 armoured personnel carriers (APCs) to the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The Arlan armoured vehicles are all locally manufactured (comprising up to 70 per cent local content) at the KPE armoured vehicle production facility in Nursultan, one of the largest and most modern armoured vehicle factories in the region.
Kazakhstan Paramount Engineering has for over the past four years delivered several batches of the Arlan APC to the Armed Forces of Kazakhstan, where they have since been in operation.

Arlan is a multi-role MRAP (mine resistant ambush protected) type armoured vehicle. The vehicles of this type have high road clearance, V-shaped bottom, can withstand debris and dissipate energy of blast.

The Arlan, the winterised variant of Paramount Group’s Marauder, is designed to operate in extreme environments to meet the ever-growing array of mission requirements undertaken by Kazakhstan’s Armed Forces, such as quick reaction force operations, infantry fire support or long-range border patrol.

The vehicle is renowned for its adaptability to the diverse conditions with features including pre-ignition engine heating and a dynamic temperature control system that can carry personnel safely and comfortably in winter conditions (as low as – 50 degrees Celsius) and summer temperatures (up to 50 degrees Celsius).

John Craig, Executive Chairman of Paramount Land Systems, stated: “The COVID-19 pandemic and particularly its direct ramifications on global supply chains has underscored the critical impetus behind governments honing their home-grown capabilities and emboldening their defence industrial complexes to remain resilient in the face of often-fluctuating circumstances and  exogenous aftershocks.”

The Arlan vehicle features a modular design and double-skin monocoque hull structure, offering increased protection against mine blasts.

The vehicle can carry 10 personnel, including three crew members. The crew cabin is fitted with two side doors, each having a bulletproof window with a firing port.

The troop compartment accommodates up to seven infantrymen. It is provided with two bulletproof windows with firing ports and can be equipped with a roof hatch to facilitate emergency exit.

The interior can be fitted with equipment such as fire suppression systems, intercom, radios, public address system, and a vehicle location and tracking system.

Armour Protection
The Arlan armoured personnel carrier variant can be fitted with Aselsan’s SARP remote-controlled weapon station. Armed with a 12.7mm NSV heavy machine gun, the weapon station allows the gunner to engage land and air-based threats, as well as asymmetric threats.

It can be provided with additional active and passive armour protection, as well as chemical or biological protection systems.

Arlan can withstand the debris and dissipating energy of explosions, its double-skin spaced armour providing security (including blast protection of STANAG 4569 Level 3a & 3b, stopping power against a 50kg TNT side blast, protecting against roadside bombs and Improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and with 8kg blast protection under the hull) while reaching a speed of up to 120km/hr for a range of 700km.

In addition to the Arlan’s advanced protections and durability, with a kerb weight of 13,500 kg and offering up to a 4,500kg payload, the highly versatile APC can ford at 1.2m and is capable of climbing gradients of 60 per cent and side slopes of 35 per cent.

The interoperable vehicle is equipped with a nuclear, biological and chemical protection system (NBC) which can address the challenges of radiation dust spread, gas and/or biological attacks, along with a mechanical 12,7 mm turret.
The Arlan can carry extra fuel tanks, water and additional combat supplies, with optional add-ons including, however not limited to, a Winterisation Kit and Central Tyre Inflation System (CTIS), alongside various weapon and fire suppression systems.

Craig noted: “In 2022, maintaining security of supply in the defence arena will be a key priority for governments across the globe. The successful delivery of this latest fleet of Arlans to the customer emblemises not only our legacy of delivering highly customised solutions on time and on budget, but also our partners’ pragmatic role in mitigating the impact of global threats.”
