L3 WESCAM’s MX-10 On-board Camcopter S-100
The Maritime Safety Directorate of the Ministry of Sea, Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Croatia recently issued the first mobilisation request to the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) for CAMCOPTER S-100 maritime surveillance services.
The service provision for Croatia will assist in maritime Coast Guard functions such as search and rescue, monitoring and surveillance, ship and port security, vessel traffic, environmental protection and response, ship casualty assistance, as well as accident and disaster response. The CAMCOPTER S-100 Unmanned Air System (UAS) will be based on the island of Brac in Croatia, and will carry out regular patrolling flights, on-demand incident monitoring missions and specific inspection operations.
The S-100 will execute these tasks equipped with an L3Harris WESCAM MX-10 Electro-Optical / Infra-Red (EO/IR) camera gimbal, an Overwatch Imaging PT-8 Oceanwatch payload and an Automatic Identification System (AIS) receiver.
Tactical Surveillance
When selecting an EO/IR imaging sensor, it is critical to understand the full scope of missions the aircraft will perform in the foreseeable future. This will dictate the required capabilities of the EO/IR imaging system. Typically, airborne ISR missions involve the detection and monitoring of various types of human activity from long distances away. Doing this covertly often requires a standoff distance beyond the range in which the aircraft can be seen or heard. Modern EO/IR payloads provide imaging over multiple wavebands. This ensures both day and night imaging capability over a wide range of weather conditions.
MX-10 is ideal for low-altitude tactical surveillance & SAR missions requiring low-weight installation flexibility. It can be installed on fixed-wing, rotary-wing, UAV, and aerostat.
Some of its key features include multi-sensor imaging/lasing payload options and the fact that it can support up to 6 payload items simultaneously. It also includes HD thermal, HD daylight and low-light cameras that provide 24/7 imaging, continuous zoom IR and EO, high-magnification spotter, high-sensitivity colour low-light imaging, eyesafe laser rangefinder and laser illuminator in choice of narrow or wide divergence.
The high-performance gimbal has a 4-axis stabilized turret with internal passive isolator for stabilisation. It boasts of sharp optics and excellent stabilisation performance, which results in industry leading target detection, recognition, and identification range performance in the 10” class. In addition, the IMU mounted to optical bench provides high target location accuracy.
MX-10’s advanced image processing offers real-time image enhancement on all sensors, high performance haze penetration, improved feature recognition and ID, 2x, 4x Ezoom, advanced video tracker, and imaging blending.
It comes with the WESCAM Advanced Video Engine (WAVE), a high-performing embedded computing engine engineered to support advanced image-processing capabilities. Furthermore, the MX-10 has rugged aerospace grade aluminium structure, to minimise maintenance requirements and simplifies repairs.
