L3Harris Reveals Advanced EO/IR Systems for Land Missions
L3Harris has introduced the Wescam MX-Series electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) imaging sensor systems, designed to offer superior battlefield awareness for land-based missions.
Featuring the Wescam MX-10 RSTA and Wescam MX-GCS MK2, these systems boast high-performance, independent stabilisation and image processing for exceptional clarity in challenging environments.
Leveraging sophisticated software applications like WIDOW, meticulously designed through L3Harris’ custom Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) software development process, these systems are optimised to excel in even the most challenging land environments.
With features including high-performance stabilisation and independent image processing, they represent the pinnacle of innovation in land mission technology.
Battlefield Integration
Wescam MX-GCS MK2 boasts seamless integration capabilities across manned and unmanned mechanised formations. This system offers heightened visibility for both gunners and commanders, providing an above-armour sight functionality.
With its advanced cross-platform communications and targeting features, facilitated by the product’s laser payloads, operators can efficiently detect, identify, paint, and track targets.
Moreover, they can seamlessly share critical information with nearby platforms, enhancing coordination and situational awareness across the operational theatre.
It promises to deliver comprehensive ground-to-ground and ground-to-air situational awareness, bolstering mission effectiveness across diverse environments.
Increased Situational Awareness
Complementing the above-armour sight capabilities of the Wescam MX-GCS MK2, L3Harris also offers the Wescam MX-10 RSTA system. This solution caters to special reconnaissance, surveying, and target acquisition missions.
The MX-10 RSTA enhances situational awareness for a multitude of field applications, including force protection, by providing configurable gunner and commander above-armour sight options. It facilitates cross-platform communication and targeting through similar functionalities as the MX-GCS MK2.
Further bolstering its capabilities, the MX-10 RSTA offers dismounted operation – a unique feature not available in the MX-GCS MK2. This allows soldiers to adapt the system to various configurations based on the mission’s demands.
Mounted on a telescopic mast for mobile and static surveillance, it was selected as a key element in the intelligence gathering solution for L3Harris’ new Vampire solution, providing long-range reconnaissance, surveillance and target acquisition capabilities.
Field-Proven Performance
The company subjects each system to rigorous testing in live environments, validating their performance against the most stringent standards and challenging environmental conditions.
In recent field evaluations, operators conducted assessments across a spectrum of scenarios, including identifying individuals and vehicles amidst smoke and diverse weather conditions.
Leveraging the integrated medium-wave infrared (MWIR) camera, targets remained discernible even in dense smoke.
The combined capabilities of the short-wave infrared (SWIR) and MWIR cameras offered detailed scene analysis, facilitating precise identification of both vehicles and distinctive environmental features.
Enhancing Operator Security
By integrating L3Harris’ cutting-edge infrared cameras and laser range finding capabilities with robust stabilisation and cross-platform communication features, not only does situational awareness improve, but operator workload is significantly reduced.
This allows operators to dedicate their attention to mission objectives with heightened efficiency. Further technological innovations from the company’s engineering teams are poised to extend Detect, Recognise, and Identify (DRI) ranges through upcoming iterations of our Wescam MX-Series systems.
The capability to observe and act swiftly provides operators with a pivotal strategic and tactical edge, particularly during critical moments where every second holds immense significance.
Collaborative Effort
The company is a key member of Team Lynx, a collaborative effort among innovative defence industry leaders, dedicated to equipping U.S. Army warfighters with the decisive advantages necessary for success on the modern battlefield.
The culmination of this effort is the XM30, a future ground vehicle engineered to provide unparalleled capabilities to soldiers. The XM30 is empowered with next-generation capabilities, ensuring strategic superiority against peer threats.
In the smallest form-factor possible, the latest generation of Wescam MX-Series independent stabilised sight systems extend and enhance the identification capabilities of the XM30.
The low profile of the EO/IR imaging systems significantly reduce the enemy’s identification ability on the battlefield. On-board processing supports Artificial Intelligence and sensor fusion for reduced operator workload.
Whether it be the integration of multi-spectral and multi-sensor EO/IR imaging and targeting sensor systems at forward operating bases, or the wider support of mission equipment packages on board tactical ground vehicles, the company is advancing missions with next-generation, ground-based capabilities.
The Wescam MX-Series EO/IR land sights set the industry standard for enhancing mission performance across all classes of land vehicles, excelling in observation, resolution, magnification, stabilisation, and precision.
