Leonardo Strengthens Ties with Bahrain

With a high profile participation in the three day Bahrain International Air Show (BIAS) 2018 (November 14-16), and other initiatives in navy and aviation, Leonardo has cemented its ties with Bahrain.

Leonardo participated in Bahrain International Air Show in November 2018, at Sakhir Air Base, presenting some of its latest technologies, not only in the aeronautics field, but also in the air defence and communications.

On display was Leonardo’s SWave MB1, the two-channel radio for dismounted soldier of SWave SDR family products, which includes handheld, man pack and vehicular tactical radio systems based on software defined radio technology. MB1 radios support wideband IP voice and data, secure CNR voice and video services.

Compliant with the U.S. JTNC (former JTRS) Software Communications Architecture (SCA) and the extensions of EU ESSOR Architecture, MB1 can support both legacy and new waveforms, thus offering interoperability with fielded radios and new C4ISR systems. Suitable for land and naval environments, the Leonardo Horizon Medium Wave Infra-Red (MWIR) thermal imaging camera that is able to meet long-range border control, security and surveillance requirements, was also on the stand.

Leonardo also showcased its RAT-31 DL, an advanced Lband solid state phased array, 3D surveillance radar, with instrumental range almost 500 km. The RAT 31 DL is a state-of-the-art radar system designed to operate within modern military Air Defence systems.

Leonardo has a long track record of significant achievement in Bahrain. Key projects including the supply of two primary surveillance radars and three Mode-S secondary surveillance radars for Bahrain’s Civil Aviation organisation and Royal Bahraini Air Force, enhance the safety and efficiency of national airspace management.

Bahrain, as well as other countries in the Gulf region, can be further supported by Leonardo’s expertise in mission management and cutting-edge sensor technology to deliver high performance, integrated solutions for ISR/ISTAR missions. Leonardo’s turnkey ISR solutions can be provided via manned or unmanned platforms and are fully equipped with a range of sensors and networked capabilities, delivering a high degree of situational awareness and contributing to force protection.

Also relevant for the region is the M-346FA, the new Fighter Attack configuration of the M-346, a highly efficient and reliable radar-equipped multirole combat aircraft, which meets an increasingly wide range of customer operational needs.

The T-346A, which is the M-346 Advanced Jet Trainer version of the Italian Air Force, is one of the aircraft displayed in the Middle East region, together with the Eurofighter Typhoon and the Italian Aerobatic Team “Frecce Tricolori”, which took part  in BIAS. “We are proud about the partnership we have with Italian Air Force”, said Lorenzo Mariani, Leonardo Chief Commercial Officer. ”The systems developed by Leonardo are high value assets, delivered with an effective operational through life-cycle,” he added.

HE Domenico Bellato, Ambassador of Italy to the Kingdom of Bahrain said: “The participation, for the first time, of the Italian Air Force aerobatic team “Frecce Tricolori” at the Bahrain International Air Show is a source of great pride and excitement.”

In the helicopter sector, Leonardo has an established presence in the region and can offer a wide range of new generation models covering a variety of civil and military roles for land and sea, perfectly suited to meet the local environmental and operational requirements. Leonardo can also offer its expertise in the naval field, where the company has a track record in the upgrade of corvettes, offshore patrol vessels and frigates, and in the land sector, where the company offers fully integrated solutions, warfare systems and cost-effective overhaul programmes.

Upgraded Al Muharraq Ship Delivered to Royal Bahrain Naval Force
During a ceremony in Mina Salman at Royal Bahrain Navy Head Quarter in November, Leonardo delivered the second of six upgraded naval vessels, Al Muharraq ship. The upgrade includes a new weapon control system, training services and logistics.

The high value upgrades proved the strong commitment of Leonardo in supporting the Royal Bahrain Naval Force as well as all its customers in the country.
The Al-Manama-class vessels were built for Bahrain by German shipbuilder Lürssen with deliveries starting in 1987. According to shipbuilder specifications, Al-Manama-class vessels were delivered with an OTO Melara 76 mm gun, an Otobreda 40 mm gun, MM40 Exocet anti-ship missiles and Dagaie decoys.

Leonardo’s Air Traffic Control Systems to Support Bahrain Defence Force
In another ceremony held during the BIAS in the presence of Royal Bahrain Air Force Commander Major General Shaikh Hamad Al Khalifa, Leonardo officially delivered air traffic control systems to the Bahrain Defence Force.

“Leonardo is proud of contributing to the Bahrain national air space security and efficiency”, commented Lorenzo Mariani, Leonardo Chief Commercial Officer,“ and strengthening our ties with Bahraini Armed Forces”. The supply includes a radar system made of a primary and a secondary monopulse, mode S radar, an approach control centre and the relevant training.

This is just one of the latest in a string of successes for Leonardo strengthening its bond with Bahrain, as the advanced air traffic control radar systems enhance the safety and efficiency of the country’s national airspace management.

Leonardo’s offer spans from turn-key combat management systems for maritime surveillance and security, to naval guns, ammunition, underwater systems for all classes of military vessels, manned and unmanned vehicles and sensors for naval missions. It includes the most advanced naval training and maintenance offer and satellite systems and services for Earth observation and geo-location, for marine environmental monitoring and maritime security.
