Nexter’s Smarter, Stronger Solutions Steal the Show at EDEX

Nexter, a leading name in military technology and a member of the KNDS Group, cemented its partnership with the Egyptian Armed Forces at EDEX 2023, showcasing an impressive array of weapons systems designed to bolster Egypt’s armoured capabilities.

The centrepiece of Nexter’s exhibition was the Enhanced Main Battle Tank (EMBT), a technological marvel representing the 4th generation of MBTs. This system boasts a 22-round 120mm autoloader, a 7-roadwheel chassis, and a 1,500 hp powerhouse. But the EMBT is more than just muscle; it’s brimming with advanced technology.

A new digital architecture, an ARX 30 remote-controlled turret, and a “deputy commander” crew position for enhanced tactical awareness pave the way for future integration with Artificial Intelligence technologies.

Digital Crew Stations
The platform has digital multifunctional crew stations with a modern sighting and control System (LIDAR, LWL).
This allows dynamic task allocation and testing of “variable number of crew stations” (2/3/4) crew chassis, manned/ unmanned remote control turret, etc.) in order to take into consideration the cognitive workload of the operators without waiting for the availability of AI technologies specific to MGCS (Main Ground Combat System).

VBCI Safety Benchmark
The VBCI MkII T40, a combat vehicle, stood as a testament to Nexter’s commitment to safety.

From high-intensity combat missions to peacekeeping operations, the VBCI keeps an entire infantry section safe. A benchmark in its field, the VBCI is an 8x8, 32-tonne vehicle that is highly modular thanks to its various versions (armoured personnel carrier, command  post, 120mm mortar, medevac and vehicle recovery), capable of carrying a 13-tonne payload, and engaged in all the French army’s major operation theatres.

In addition to these qualities, the firepower of the T40 turret can be added. The turret is remotely operated and equipped with the 40mm CTA gun and a MBDA medium range missile launcher (MMP).

The 40 CTA, which already arms the French Army’s JAGUAR EBRC turret, fires the various 40mm telescoped munitions that represent the future of medium-calibre munitions: high explosive, airburst, and arrow shells capable of piercing up to 140mm of armoured steel.

Jaguar’s Tactical Versatility
Furthermore, the Jaguar combat and recce vehicle and the land version of the RAPIDFire turret showcased Nexter’s dedication to tactical mobility and enhanced survivability.

Armed with the T40 turret and an anti-tank MMP pod, Jaguar offers both a recce and anti-tank capability from short range engagement up to 4,000 metres. Its six-wheeled chassis provides high tactical mobility and allows growth potential for an enhanced survivability, fitted for missions in various operational contexts, from stabilisation up to high intensity.

The main mission of RAPIDFire is the protection of vital assets or defence against different air threats including UAVs (Remotely Piloted Aircraft, drones, micro light aircraft, aero models), para motors, para gliders, and helicopters (hovering or not).

Advanced Armaments
The company’s product array included not just vehicles but also advanced armaments. The exhibit highlighted the ARX 30 and ARX 25 remote-controlled turrets, equipped with 30mm and 25mm guns respectively, aligning with ground combat needs.

The KATANA, a high-precision guided 155mm ammunition, and the NARWHAL 20mm naval turret were also showcased, emphasising Nexter’s expertise in ammunition and weaponry.

KATANA is a 155 fire and forget ammunition designed to enable point firings in complex operational scenarios, including in urban areas. By combining its high efficiency warhead and its accuracy, it has a large effect on target with a contained collateral damage area.

Leclerc’s Combat Prowess
The Leclerc MBT stood tall, symbolising Nexter’s pioneering advancements in combat vehicles. Known for integrating distinguishing capacities like an autoloader and precision firing, this tank remains an unrivalled asset in high-intensity operations.

Additionally, Nexter displayed its medium calibre weapons, including the Rafale’s 30mm gun and the NARWHAL 20mm naval turret, serving in the Egyptian forces.

The CAESAR 6x6 and 8x8, the 105LG artillery and the NERVA range of land robots equipped with various mission kits were amongst Nexter’s artillery family.

EDEX 2023 wasn’t just about showcasing hardware; it signified a deeper collaboration between Nexter and the Egyptian Armed Forces. By presenting a diverse range of advanced solutions, the company demonstrated its commitment to tailoring its technologies to meet the specific needs of the Egyptian army.
