Revamped Griffon Soars with Hi-Tech Upgrade

The skies over Canada witnessed a historic event recently as the Royal Canadian Air Force’s (RCAF) first modernised CH-146 Griffon helicopter took to the air. This marks a significant milestone in the Griffon Limited Life Extension (GLLE) project, a collaborative effort between Bell Textron Canada and the RCAF.

The legendary workhorse, a variant of the Bell 412EP, is receiving a complete overhaul. Bell is upgrading crucial aeronautical components, from its avionics systems and cockpit displays to its engines and sensor systems. The comprehensive upgrade ensures the Griffon remains a vital asset for the RCAF well into the future.

Operational Readiness
The successful first flight comes just five months after Bell secured the In-Service Support (ISS) contract, guaranteeing the Griffon fleet’s operational readiness until 2039. This project signifies not just a modernised helicopter, but a long-term commitment to keeping the skies safe for Canada.

To commemorate the historic flight milestone, the company hosted an event at its Commercial Centre of Excellence for attendees to witness the first flight of the upgraded platform.
“The Bell 412 remains a venerable aircraft of choice for militaries across the world, with the Royal Canadian Air Force operating the largest and best equipped militarised fleet of 412s,” said Danny Maldonado, the company’s chief commercial officer. “Bell is honoured to continue the relationship with the Royal Canadian Air Force as they expand their mission capabilities with next generation technologies.”

Skyward Heroes’ Journey
The Royal Canadian Air Force employs its fleet of CH-146 Griffon helicopters for a wide range of missions. These aircraft are used globally for humanitarian relief efforts in support of the United Nations and to provide reassurance measures under the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Domestically, the fleet is extensively utilised for search and rescue operations and to support first responders across Canada.

The CH-146 Griffon fleet surpassed an impressive milestone last year, logging over half a million flight hours.

“As Canada’s only helicopter manufacturer in-country, Bell is a proud partner of the Canadian Armed Forces. Our facility’s local presence provides us with the ability to work closely with the Canadian government, as well as other local customers to address their aircraft needs,” said Michael Nault, General Manager, Bell Textron Canada.
The first upgraded CH-146 Griffon completed under the GLLE project is expected to be delivered to the Canadian government in 2026 pending military certification.
