Rheinmetall Clinches Deal for PzH 2000 Howitzers
German defence giant Rheinmetall has secured a €135 million contract to supply crucial components for 22 PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzers for the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces).
The deal involves Rheinmetall’s Weapon and Ammunition and Vehicle Systems Europe divisions, tasked with delivering both the 155mm L52 weapon systems and the chassis for each howitzer.
Following final assembly and testing at Rheinmetall’s Unterlüß facilities, the first PzH 2000s are expected to be delivered to the Bundeswehr by summer 2025.
Weaponry Mastery
The contract emphasises Rheinmetall’s expertise as a technology leader for 155mm artillery weapons as well as a high-performing partner in tracked vehicle construction.
The company is a global leader for gun barrels and the accompanying ammunition technology, including the 120mm smoothbore cannon for battle tanks, for example.
With a vast ammunition supply and rapid replenishment, a stable gun platform, maximum aiming precision, and an automated autoloader ensuring a high rate of fire, the PzH 2000 establishes itself as the benchmark for modern barrelled artillery. Its exceptional mobility and autonomy in navigation and fire control further enhance its capabilities.
Agile Artillery Solution
The PzH 2000 represents an agile weapon system utilised in conventional and asymmetric mission scenarios, providing crucial indirect fire support.
The fully automatic handling of the onboard supply of 60 projectiles and a highly effective 155mm/L52 gun enable maximum effect against targets with a high rate of fire.
The fire control system and ammunition matrix can factor in already introduced as well as future NATO ammunition types (Joint Ballistics Memorandum of Understanding (JBMOU)-compatible). These properties make the PzH 2000 the most effective barrelled artillery system in the world.
Tailored for joint operations, the PzH 2000 boasts full autonomy in command, navigation, and fire control, along with inherent system stability, offering novel mission capabilities like engaging moving targets and defending encampments. Meeting international standards for modern barrelled artillery, it’s trusted by armed forces from eight nations, with more than 360 systems produced and deployed across the globe.
The contract underlines the Bundeswehr’s trust in the quality and reliability of the PzH 2000. This weapon system, continuously updated since its development in the 1980s and 90s, is known for its exceptional mobility, long-range firing power and protection.
In Ukraine, the PzH 2000 is presently proving its reliability and accuracy. The technology group, located in Duesseldorf, is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of weapons and ammunition systems.
